This article provides a
guideline for adding and
changing content to a
website. We will discuss a
few very simple steps to
follow when adding content
to buttons, headings, menu
items, links and text
fields. If you’re not
familiar with Elementor
yet, please
read this
article or
request a
demo.
1. Buttons, Headings & Menu items
It’s
important to make sure the
text and the words are not
too long. This is for two
reasons: effectiveness and responsiveness.
- Make sure
the text provides enough
information to indicate
what the page is about (if
it’s a heading) or where
it links to if you click
it (if it’s a button).
- A heading should just be enough to interest a
reader to read
more.
- Text inside
a button should
be short and
clear (max
2
words)
- E.g.
for a button that links
to a contact form the text
“contact” should be
enough. If you make it 'Neem contact op' for Dutch for example, this is too long and the text will be put on two lines, increasing the size of the button / making it look weird.
- Visitors are more eager to
click on clear and small
buttons. This is also the
case for menu items. It
should be clear and
short.
- If
the text in a heading or
button is too long, the
layout on different screen
width can break. Please
consider that e.g. a
heading with a lot of
text will break up in multiple lines on
smaller screens, or fall of the screen completely:
.
Rule of
thumb
2. Links
Before you go further,
make sure you know how
links in Elementor work.
If
not, read
this
article.
To add a link through
the Elementor Editor there
are two main options: add
the link
as
text or
add
an internal
URL. Most of the
links should be added as
internal URL, but on every
website there are cases
where you should add the
link manually.
- Textlinks (manually adding an URL) should be used when linking to:
- an anchor / specific block on a page (like /rooms#presidential-suite)
- an external
website
- the booking
engine
- a PDF
file
Make sure to never use
the base url (https://example.com/rooms#presidential-suite) when you link to a page within the website. Always solely add the part after
the slash: /rooms#presidential-suite
- Internal link should
be
used in all other cases.
- Open in a new tab when you're linking to:
- an external
website
- the booking
engine
- an PDF
tile
3. Text fields
- When you add/change
content inside a text
field there is just one
important thing to
consider: Is this a
summarising text field, or
is this text field
supposed to tell a story.
You can see the difference
quite easily by looking at
what the main focus of the
element is.
- E.g. a
text element with a
background image is not
supposed to have a lot of
text inside.
- Make sure to add
the longer and
story-telling text in the
“text focussed”
elements.
4. Conclusion/summary
- Keep it short, clear and
explicit. Be concise and also
take translations in
consideration.
- Check the different screen
widths, also for
translations
- Make adjustments where
needed
- Think about the rules of thumb
described above when adding
links.
